Purpose

Take your 3+ years of experience as a journey-level sprinkler fitter, plumber, or fire sprinkler contractor to the next level as a Sprinkler Construction Inspector with the City of Milwaukee, and serve a critical role in keeping Milwaukee’s citizens safe!

Under the direction of the Plumbing Inspection Supervisor, the Sprinkler Construction Inspector conducts fire suppression system inspections in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings to ensure compliance with applicable codes.

Essential Functions

  • Periodically inspect fire suppression systems, and review and process inspection reports submitted to the department as specified in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 25.
  • Inspect installations and review plans for new and existing automatic sprinkler systems for compliance with City and State codes and NFPA standards. Inspect all new and remodeled sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, and chemical suppression systems.
  • Witness tests of new and existing sprinkler and standpipe systems to detect leaks and other system defects.
  • Prepare detailed reports of inspections performed, code violations observed, and corrective recommendations offered. Keep accurate records of inspections, and make detailed reports on complaints and rejections. Prepare, maintain, and process City forms and records.
  • Identify improvements and changes needed in ordinances, policies, and code provisions, and draft suggested changes for review.
  • Investigate system defects referred by other departmental inspectors. Conduct research to determine the periods that specific City and State code provisions were in effect to expedite enforcement activities. Work with owners, building managers, installers, contractors, and others to ensure that sprinkler system installations conform with code requirements; issue written orders when voluntary compliance is not forthcoming.
  • Perform pre-court inspections to determine the current status of code violations. Testify in court regarding violations of the sprinkler and standpipe code following non-compliance with orders.

Conditions of Employment

The Sprinkler Construction Inspector must be willing and able to do the following:

  • Work outdoors in variable weather and environmental conditions as well as tolerate noise and exposure to airborne contaminants.
  • Perform inspection services and work requiring moderate physical exertion, including stooping and bending, walking distances, climbing ladders and stairs, exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and lifting and moving objects weighing 10-20 lbs. frequently.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Three years of experience as a licensed Journeyman Automatic Sprinkler Fitter, Journeyman Plumber, Master Plumber, or Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor.
  2. One of the following State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) licenses at time of application and throughout employment: 1) Journeyman Automatic Sprinkler Fitter, 2) Journeyman Plumber, 3) Master Plumber, or 4) Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor. NOTE: The license type and number must be listed on the application.
  3. State of Wisconsin DSPS Cross Connection Control Tester Registration and Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Tester Certification within the first six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  4. Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment and the availability of a properly registered and insured vehicle for use on the job (mileage reimbursement provided).

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret the State of Wisconsin DSPS plumbing code at the journeyman level.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes.
  • Knowledge of building and construction principles, techniques, and materials.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply construction safety principles and practices.
  • Ability to read drawings and blueprints to be able to understand building systems.
  • Knowledge of mathematics, geometry, and algebra to perform calculations and make precise measurements.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex work-related documents.
  • Written communication skills to be able to prepare correspondence and reports.
  • Oral communication skills to clearly and accurately share information and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff, elected officials, owners, building managers, installers, contractors, plumbers, designers, architects, engineers, and attorneys.
  • Customer service knowledge and skills to serve the public in a positive manner.
  • Ability to think critically to analyze and solve complex problems.
  • Skill in using standard computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 2HN) for City of Milwaukee resident is $63,569-$76,806 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $62,009-$74,922. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations and the Department of Neighborhood Services reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
