Introduction

Purpose

The Plant & Equipment Repair Supervisor directly and indirectly supervises the daily operation of the DPW Infrastructure Services - Plant & Equipment section.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate and schedule vehicles and equipment needed daily by Street Maintenance employees.
  • Oversee the repair and maintenance of tools and equipment utilized by various departments that work out of the DPW Field Headquarters.
  • Act as liaison between the department and fleet operations to coordinate repairs on fleet vehicles.
  • Oversee daily operation of the tool and barricade shops that supply, repair and maintain tools, equipment and barricades utilized by DPW crews.
  • Supervise all employees assigned to the plant & equipment section, barricade shop, tool shop and Equipment Mechanics assigned to the underground section; supervise employees in the inventory section in the absence of the Inventory Service Manager.
  • Supervise and arrange distribution of construction materials such as asphalt, backfill material, lime chips, sand and soil as needed by construction crews.
  • Oversee yard and garage operations for the 20 acre storage and parking area, including oversight of the vehicle wash, storage bins, dump site, fuel storage and dispensing area and the equipment storage area.
  • Oversee cleaning activities within the garage area of DPW Field Headquarters.
  • Coordinate snow removal operations at DPW Field Headquarters during snow emergencies.
  • Oversee the cleaning activities within the garage area at the DPW Field Headquarters.
  • In conjunction with the Inventory Services Manager, monitor and program the centralized building security system and review access records on a daily basis.
  • Supervise the maintenance and operation of the asphalt silo and emulsion tank.
  • Coordinate the disposal of all hazardous waste and monitor the Haz-Mat area for compliance with Federal Health Standards, including maintenance of all records related to hazardous material disposed of.
  • Coordinate the sale or disposal of all scrap material generated at this location.
  • Perform administrative functions, including approving employee time entries and review, process and authorize material purchases and requisitions.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be available on a 24-hour, on-call basis to respond to building security issues.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee, Department of Public Works employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position.
  2. Four years of experience in street/sewer maintenance, sanitation, water distribution or fleet operations, two years of which must have been at the level of Street Repair Supervisor or an equivalent Department of Public Works supervisory position.
  3. Valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 1DX) for City of Milwaukee residents is $54,865 - $76,806 annually and the non-resident salary range is $53,519 - $74,922 annually.  Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations and the Department of Public Works reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

NOTE:  Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process and have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
