This position may be filled at the level of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Developer Sr. (PG 2IX) or GIS Developer (PG 2GX), depending upon the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the Information and Technology Management Division.

Purpose

Under the direction of the GIS Developer-Project Leader, the GIS Developer-SR. & GIS Developer will work within the GIS team to provide maintenance of an enterprise ArcGIS environment and data services to all City departments. This position is the main resource for Map Milwaukee development and support.

Essential Functions

  • Administer and maintain an Enterprise ArcGis Server environment by ensuring that the server is running properly and by working with the software vendor to ensure functionality and implementation of upgrades.
  • Write scripts or develop models to automate tasks such as building databases or publishing data; bring data into GIS system using PYTHON scripting.
  • Develop applications and services for the ArcGIS Server environment and ArcGIS Server applications and projects.
  • Maintain Map Milwaukee including troubleshooting problems, assisting users and responding to questions from users.
  • Provide training and user support to City employees and citizens on Map Milwaukee to optimize efficiencies and to meet users’ needs for related data and information.
  • Work closely with customers, follow up on issues and concerns and ensure customers are informed regarding upgrades and changes; ensure management is informed regarding time, activities, status and provide reports and presentations.

Minimum Requirements

**Note: Qualified candidates will be placed on the highest level eligible list for which they qualify, based upon qualifications and experience.

GIS Developer Sr.

  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field, including coursework in programming, geography, land engineering, automated mapping and/or GIS from an accredited college or university.
  2. Two years of professional-level experience working in a GIS developer role, including the use of ESRI, Oracle software, SQL Server and PYTHON scripting.
  3. Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

GIS Developer

  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field, including coursework in programming, geography, land engineering, automated mapping and/or GIS from an accredited college or university.
  2. One year of professional-level experience working in a GIS developer role, including the use of ESRI, Oracle software and PYTHON scripting.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Current Salary

GIS Developer Sr.: The current salary range (PAY RANGE 2IX) for City of Milwaukee resident is $58,462-$81,844 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $57,028-$79,836.  Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

GIS Developer: The current salary range (PAY RANGE 2GX) for City of Milwaukee resident is $51,469-$72,063 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $50,206-$70,295.  Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
