Purpose

The Graduate Intern will assist Compensation Services staff members in the collection, analysis, maintenance, and presentation of data and information related to job evaluation studies and various compensation issues.  

The Graduate Intern will work on a part-time basis year-round while enrolled in a graduate program from an accredited college or university.

Essential Functions

  • Generate quantitative and qualitative information for use in determining recommendations for compensation related issues and job evaluation studies.
  • Locate and compile needed information for electronic databases, published studies, the Internet, and existing files to assist in determining recommendations for job evaluation studies.
  • Collect and analyze data in spreadsheets, charts, and documents and generate presentations designed for the intended audience.
  • Assist with data collection for job evaluation studies, which may include interviewing employees at their worksites.
  • Assist with wage and salary surveys by researching, compiling, and documenting needed information.
  • Review and edit job descriptions for various jobs.
  • Assist with the design, documentation, development, and implementation of career ladders.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Current enrollment in a Master’s program from an accredited college or university, including coursework in statistics, human resources, industrial/organizational psychology, education, public administration, or a closely related field.

  • Knowledge of descriptive statistics used for reporting findings.
  • Ability to conduct in-depth analysis using traditional and advanced methods.
  • Oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce correspondence and reports.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills to be able to establish and maintain good relationships with other City departments.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize the applicant tracking and employee data systems such as PeopleSoft, Human Capital Management (HCM) and FMIS in order to produce reports and to retrieve data.
  • Ability to perform accurate data entry.
  • Superior organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Written communication skills to proofread documents so that they are publication-ready.  
  • Ability to read and interpret work-related documents.
  • Ability to complete special projects within tight deadlines and follow through on long-term projects.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and a strong sense of integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organize assignments and manage time to complete tasks based on departmental deadlines.
  • Proficient using standard computer software and programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Current Salary

Pay Range (9PN): The current starting hourly rate is $14.28 for City of Milwaukee residents. The non-resident starting hourly rate is $13.93.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

INITIAL FILING DATE - The examination will be held as soon as practical after January 11, 2018. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice. However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination. Unless otherwise required by law, the City of Milwaukee will not provide alternative test administration.
