AWT Plant Maintenance Supervisor

Nature Of Work

The employee in this class is responsible for setting and maintaining the direction of the preventative and reactive maintenance teams at the AWT Plant (96 MGD) and pumping stations (220+). Under administrative direction, the employee performs assignments related to leadership and AWT Plant and pumping stations preventive and reactive maintenance matters, which are complex and of unusual difficulty requiring the exercise of extensive initiative and independent judgment. Work is review through conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Provides assistance to the AWT Plant Manger in maintaining the focus on the vision of the organization, continuously communicates the vision to other team members; leads by example, proactively interacts with the organization, builds and maintains a culture of trust.

Coaches and motivates other team members and team leaders; facilitates communication within the teams; identifies problems in early stages; reviews/updates standard operating procedures (SOPs); evaluates performance of teams, Team Leaders, and some specialists; mediates employee disputes; makes timely decisions.

Supports the core business by removing obstacles to continually improve operational reliability, cost effectiveness and treated effluent quality through efficiently and effectively maintaining facilities at the AWT Plant and pumping stations, increasing automation and updating equipment where appropriate.

Responds to emergency situations and leads actions to protect the environment, personnel and the facilities.

Stays current with industry trends and new strategies, ensures that sufficient resources are available, directs implementation of new strategies.

Prepares reports and correspondence; leads, assigns, develops and evaluates personnel; manages the Division budget and work process.

Demonstrates progress toward Division and Department goals.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Advanced knowledge of: how to lead and direct teams; modern industrial maintenance methods, principles and practices in relation to wastewater facilities, operations, maintenance, and equipment.

Extensive knowledge of: federal, state, and municipal rules, regulations and ordinances pertaining to wastewater treatment and disposal.

Intermediate knowledge of: the organization; budgeting; performance management; long and short term planning; computers; modern developments, current literature, and sources of information relating to operating, maintaining and leading wastewater organizations.

Basic knowledge of: performance measures; cost/benefit analysis.

Intermediate ability to: set and monitor goals; motivate; maintain external focus.

Advanced skill in: communication; facilitation; problem solving; decision making; interpersonal relations.

Intermediate skill in: coaching, conflict resolution.

Desired talents: should be a relater, be responsible, and be positive.

Accountabilities: bi-annual reviews with team leaders and specialists; number of meetings with AWT Plant Technicians; timeliness of decisions; identifies problems in early stages; demonstrates and monitors progress to Department and Division goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree, preferably a master’s degree in civil, environmental, or mechanical engineering, construction management, or a related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater, industrial system operations, water, chemical or petroleum process maintenance or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

NOTE: Business or public administration is considered related if the experience is appropriate and at a high level.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license may be required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
