Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of average difficulty involving re-reading of water, sewer, and private well meters when consumption amounts are disputed, performing meter service activities, and recording consumption figures. Most tasks are performed out-of-doors requiring employee to work in various weather conditions. Although under general supervision, employee usually works alone and has extensive contact with the public, requiring the exercise of tact, courtesy, and some initiative and independent judgment. Of importance is ensuring that meters are read accurately and that service orders are executed promptly. Work is reviewed through daily observation of readings recorded and service orders performed.

Examples of Duties

Prepares work orders and action orders to facilitate completion of assignments; assists meter reading personnel in locating meters that are difficult to find by using a probe rod, operating an electronic metal detector or making a radio call to the meter reading office for directions from the location file; reads meters for final billing, re-reads, mis-reads, mis-marking of information or customer complaints; answers customer questions and resolves complaints or refers same to supervisors; explains city policies and procedures to the public; drives a light motor vehicle to and from work sites; reads city map and follow assigned route; cleans and fuels vehicle so it is ready for operation.

Performs meter service activities; makes visual checks for water leaks; uses hand tools to turn water on or off, and to remove, replace or install blind washers, meters covers, curb locks, and water meters; notifies supervisors of any leaks or unlawful water usage detected; installs meters, governors and timers to facilitate operation of a water or wastewater facility.

Participates in surveys and records consumer names, meter locations, address changes, and meter numbers; collects bills, completes deposits and issues receipts when assigned to evening shift.

Oversees and trains new meter service personnel on a task basis.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: the city and its geography, street locations, and meter locations; tools, processes and procedures employed in servicing and reading meters.

Ability to: communicate with the public tactfully and courteously; keep accurate account records; perform work requiring physical exertion; drive a light motor vehicle skillfully and safely in municipal traffic; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and officials.

Skill in: the use and care of meter servicing tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and three (3) years of experience in water meter reading and/or servicing; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience.
