Nature Of Work

An employee in this class of work is responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating activities related to the City’s recycling and waste reduction program. Work is of average difficulty; the employee should possess the basic skills to gain knowledge of solid waste and recycling methods, procedures, strategic planning, and equipment. Work is performed under general supervision; however, the employee is expected to exercise some initiative and independent judgment and work independently and responsibly on assigned projects. This position involves assisting with educational programs, public awareness campaigns, grant applications, data collection and analysis, and report preparation. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Assists in: developing, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating activities related to the City’s recycling, waste reduction and household chemical collection programs complying with federal, state and local guidelines; promoting recycling by individual residents, multi-family complexes and commercial entities; developing promotional campaigns; developing programs directed towards keeping the public aware of the value of recycling, focusing attention on waste reduction, and encouraging the public to buy recycled products; making presentations at schools and professional organizations; applying for grants.

Assists in: coordinating special events such as Earth Day, Mayor’s Hillsborough River and Coastal Cleanup, and America Recycles Day; coordinating special seasonal recycling programs such as collection events for discarded Christmas trees; design and implementation of school recycling programs.

 Utilizes computers to develop and prepare reports and correspondence; prepares brochures and other media.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: Microsoft Office and desktop publishing programs.

Ability to: perform independent research as assigned; analyze and present data; express ideas clearly and concisely in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; prepare and make public presentations.

Skill in: Written and verbal communication; the use of personal computers.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s, preferably bachelor’s, degree and one (1) year of experience in recycling, environmental studies or planning, or a field related to solid waste operations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license. Ability to obtain HAZWOPER and SWANA Recycling Certifications within six (6) months of employment.
